We often hear how addictive pornography has become. But porn isn’t a drug so how can it be addictive? We all know that cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol have chemicals that lead to physical addictions—which can indeed lead to death. The theory is that drugs lead to addictions. But porn isn’t a drug, so how can it be addictive?

Our brains produce chemicals that help us function. Epinephrine helps us get excited—that heart-pounding response to danger. This has also been reproduced in the laboratory as a drug that doctors can administer to a patient if they go into cardiac arrest. Another brain-producing drug is dopamine. This critical drug helps us move our bodies. It has also been reproduced in the lab so doctors can administer to patients that suffer from diseases like Parkinson’s.

What does this have to do with porn? Extensive brain research shows how the frontal lobe of the brain is where addictions can transpire. I won’t get into all of the mindboggling details, but suffice it to say that repeated use of porn gives off high levels of epinephrine and dopamine leading to brain rewiring that makes it one of the most challenging addictions to ever battle.

Slavery is an apt description for the neurochemical trap that pornography causes inside the brain. So when you hear about porn being an innocent diversion, or won’t lead to any harm, that is a lie. It is mentally and physically addictive and it can be one of the most challenging addictions to ever conquer.
