Herpes: The STD you don’t want

In the vast array of sexually transmitted diseases, many of which are now incurable, Herpes seems to be the one that provokes the most questions. Here are some straight answers for you:

1. Herpes simplex virus type 1 is the bugger that causes cold sores. It is estimated that 50-80% of U.S. adults are infected. Even a casual kiss can spread this one-or sharing lip gloss.

2. Herpes simplex virus type 2 is less common but much worse. One in five Americans over age 12 have been infected. The problem with diagnosing this one is that symptoms can vary from person to person—yet the disease can spread regardless of the symptoms. Most have clusters of exceedingly painful blisters.

3. Having Herpes makes it easier to contract HIV. And if you are unlucky enough to contract HIV then the outcome for you is far worse.

Sexual abstinence is the only way to prevent this disease—and then share a monogamous sexual relationship with someone who is not infected.

Genital herpes is a lifelong condition for which there is no cure. Having it can force you to make inconvenient changes in your life, particularly in your sex life, and it can cause you a lot of pain and discomfort. You simply would rather not have it. Web MD
